Anjaneyasana - Low Crescent Lunge

1000 stories told, and I felt every one. Low Crescent Lunge embodies so many things and pulls on your heartstrings, which are actually deep in your hips, releasing an emotional attachment to whatever you feel connected to while practicing this posture.

You can imagine embodying the moon, a reflection of the sun and grow a deeper relationship for our seasons or tides. You can imagine the celestial and divine beings living beyond the stars. You can take inspiration from the original Sanskrit and allow the posture to be an expression of your reverence to motherhood. No matter what you choose to devote your practice to, this posture gives you the power to experience yoga, the unison of body and mind and your ability to use your body to connect to your emotions, on day one.

Practicing with your animal gives you the ability to see where they can grow, a desire to constantly do what’s best for them, and an impulse to be a better human for them. It deepens your bond no matter how you practice because you are engaging and unwinding your hip flexors all the way down to your psoas, and your animal has infinite opportunities to connect in whatever way feels right to them, including asking for your interaction because your hands are free and not holding your weight.

How to Practice

  1. Come to all fours

  2. Step one foot forward, inside your hand

  3. On an inhale, press your hands into the ground and pushyour shoulders down and out

  4. On an exhale, Bring your hands to your thigh and push down

  5. Lengthen your spine

  6. Inhale reach your arms in front of, above, then behind you slowly

  7. Keep your knee in line with your toes, and play with the flexion in your hips and front ankle

  8. Repeat on the other side

Examples of animal interactions

Paws Up

Your animal resting their weight on you creates both resistance and equilibrium training aspects to your physical practice. Tugging or play fighting in this posture creates the same resistance and dynamic movement to add these training elements, too!

Jumping Over the Moon

When they push off of your leg, you learn to counterbalance that movement, building strength in your leg and knee. Your animal builds strength and stamina the more they practice.

Big Stretch

Your pet learns that you value communication and begins offering this behavior when they are too tired for the other options to sound like a fun way to get treats.

Snuggles Only

If your pet is tired or not in the mood to play, they will most likely leave, lay down or snuggle your front leg. Their boundaries should be respected.
